Ashburn’s Outpatient Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

Ashburn Clinic provides individual and group psychodynamic psychotherapy as part of its outpatient services. Psychotherapy may be suitable for you if you are concerned about some or all of the following:

  • Feeling like you lack a sense of control and efficacy in life.
  • Struggling with stress in your life, possibly finding that friendships and relationships break down.
  • Experiencing a lack of meaning and purpose in your life.
  • Feeling anxious or low in mood about things in your life – your work, relationships, and sense of yourself.

What is a Psychodynamic approach?

A psychodynamic approach supports you to explore your underlying beliefs, emotions, patterns of life, and defences, which can make intimate connections difficult and possibly break down. This can happen both in one-to-one psychodynamic psychotherapy and in group psychodynamic psychotherapy.

In individual psychodynamic psychotherapy sessions, we will help you explore and understand the deeper emotional and psychological factors affecting your wellbeing.

A group framework helps you to understand yourself in the context of others who may struggle with similar things. You will be encouraged to think of your own development and growing up, and to think about situations or repeating patterns that feel unhelpful and destructive to living a fuller, more meaningful life.

Why might you choose to be part of a group?

Being part of a group can be helpful if you are interested in exploring how you are as a person and the thoughts, feelings, and beliefs you hold about yourself and others. It will mean thinking about your early development – all of us begin our lives with a range of attachment relationships. These connections have an impact in the ‘here and now’ as the patterns you have developed in life grow from these early relationships. Being part of a group will mean thinking about how your life is now and looking at how the past might be influencing you.

A group is helpful in promoting insight and exploring alternative ways to think, feel, and act in your life. When you are trying to understand past patterns and experiences, you may find that others may experience something similar and have gained helpful knowledge and feedback to offer to you. Being part of a group nurtures peer support and connection with others, which gives you an opportunity for personal growth.

What will the focus of the group be?

This group will provide an opportunity to explore and understand yourself at a deeper level through interaction with other group members through a group process.

The group will run weekly for 12 weeks, and it is important that you make a commitment to attend all sessions for the group to work optimally.

Groups will be held on-site at Ashburn Clinic, 496 Taieri Road, Halfway Bush, Dunedin. Free parking is available.

Referral Process

We ask that, if possible, you are referred for either individual or group psychotherapy by a health professional who is involved in your care/treatment, although it is possible to self-refer.

All referrals should be made on our Outpatient Referral Form.
