Supporting Whānau Carers of Palliative Patients
Presented by Denise van Aalst, RN, MHealSc (PC), Kōwhai Co-ordinator for Otago Community Hospice
About This Seminar
In 2009 The Otago Community Hospice instigated research into the needs of family and whānau carers, supporting patients on the hospice programme. From this research, they created the Kōwhai Programme for family and whānau. The purpose of the programme is to create opportunities to meet other carers and to gain skills and information they may not otherwise have access to.
The programme continues to evolve and, in 2022, the Ending Life Well podcast was begun, creating the opportunity to share this information to a worldwide audience. This presentation will share how the evolution came to be, the process of creating the podcast (from the perspective of a complete novice) and how the topics offered reflect Te Whare Tapa Whā, an underlying premise of hospice in New Zealand.
Recorded live at Ashburn Clinic on the 12th of August 2024.
